IUPUI chancellor expresses thanks to police for safeguarding campus

  • March 19, 2013

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Chancellor Charles R. Bantz today expressed his thanks to members of the IU-Indianapolis Police, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indiana State Police and Wishard Police Department who searched every building and parking facility on the campus for an individual who was reported to have a shotgun or rifle in his possession.

“These officers responded quickly and conducted a thorough investigation to ensure the safety of the campus,” Bantz said. “I am pleased the incident ended without harm to any member of the campus community or visitors to IUPUI,” Bantz said.

The chancellor also thanked faculty, staff and students for following instructions issued by the emergency notification system and for being patient during the search, which ended at 5 p.m. when an “all clear” message was issued. With that message, the campus returned to normal, with evening classes to held as usual.

The incident began at 12:30 p.m. when a woman reported seeing a man with what appeared to be a rifle or shotgun in a campus parking lot.
