INDIANAPOLIS -- Two Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis faculty members graduated from the Higher Education Resources Services leadership development program for female faculty administrators, IUPUI officials have announced.

Karen Bravo, professor of law and associate dean for international affairs at the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law, and Gina Sanchez Gibau, associate dean for student affairs in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, graduated from the HERS Bryn Mawr Summer Institute that took place June 22 to July 6 in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

“The Byrn Mawr Summer Institute seeks participants such as Professors Bravo and Sanchez Gibau, who because of their prior success and expertise as campus leaders, are able to contribute to the institute as well as learn from it,” said IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz. "We are fortunate to have such talented faculty who were willing to invest their time to strengthen their leadership skills. IUPUI, as well as Karen and Gina’s respective schools, will benefit from that investment."

Bravo has been a law school faculty member since 2004 and was appointed associate dean for international affairs in 2011.

Sanchez Gibau has been at IUPUI since 2000 serving as associate professor of anthropology since 2006 and as associate dean since 2011.

Since 1976, the HERS Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration has offered female faculty and administrators the opportunity to participate in an intensive program that prepares them to be leaders in higher education. Held first at Bryn Mawr College, the institutes have been offered at Wellesley College since 1978 and the University of Denver since 2007.

Sixty-seven participants from 63 institutions across the U.S. attended this year’s institutes. Responding to the current environment for higher education globally, the institute’s special focus this year was “Women Leaders: Facing the Challenges as We Re-Invent Higher Education.”

Bravo’s and Sanchez Gibau’s participation in the HERS Bryn Mawr Summer Institute was sponsored by several IUPUI units: the Office of Academic Affairs, the Office for Women, the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law and the IU School of Liberal Arts.  The two women were selected to represent IUPUI through a process facilitated by the Office for Women. Over the past 26 years, IUPUI has sponsored 46 women, faculty and staff, to participate in HERS Institutes at Bryn Mawr College, Wellesley College or the University of Denver.
