Chancellor delivers report to community, says campus moving at warp speed

INDIANAPOLIS -- IUPUI Chancellor and IU Executive Vice President Charles R. Bantz delivered his annual Report to the Community today, saying the campus was on the move.
Bantz compared the changes at IUPUI since the campus was established in 1969 to the difference between a World War II vintage aircraft and a spaceship. “We are moving at warp speed.”
The chancellor outlined the campus's progress toward achieving key ambitious goals he set when he was appointed to his position in 2003, and he reviewed the new Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis strategic plan.
Bantz said the campus awarded more than 1,400 more baccalaureate degrees last year than in 2002; increased research funding by 50 percent since 2002; and quadrupled civic engagement, involving nearly 9,000 students in service learning last year alone.
The chancellor also pointed to the recently concluded IUPUI IMPACT Campaign, which raised $1.39 billion, the largest fundraising campaign in Indiana University’s nearly 200-history.
"Our Commitment to Indiana and Beyond: IUPUI's Strategic Plan” embraces the distinctiveness of IUPUI’s programs, location, students, faculty and staff. It builds on IUPUI’s strengths and honors its past investments, while aiming to accomplish much more in the future. Organized around three key priorities -- supporting the success of our students, advancing the health and life sciences, and contributing to the well-being of people in Indianapolis, the region, the state and beyond -- it sets forth 10 initiatives that provide a road map for continuing to advance and transform IUPUI.
Bantz said the initiatives are:
- Promote undergraduate student learning and success.
- Optimize enrollment management.
- Increase capacity for graduate education.
- Transform online education.
- Leverage strengths in health and life sciences.
- Accelerate innovation and discovery.
- Deepen commitment to community engagement.
- Strengthen internationalization efforts.
- Promote a healthy, sustainable and inclusive campus.
- Develop faculty and staff.
The plan envisions a technology-rich campus that permits real-time, boundary-spanning access to content and subject matter experts on campus, in the community and around the world; and where programs and services are delivered in coordinated, integrated and flexible ways so learners can be served wherever and whenever needs arise.
