Record crowd expected for annual IU GLBT Alumni Association Celebration Weekend
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The annual Indiana University Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Alumni Association Celebration Weekend will, for the sixth year in a row, coincide with the Bloomington PRIDE Film Festival. The event, set for the weekend of Jan. 24 to 26, will also celebrate the association's unique scholarship campaign.
"Come and see old friends, make new ones and share in the celebration of the success of our groundbreaking GLBT scholarship campaign, the first in the nation," GLBTAA president Mike Shumate said. "All faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends, please join us for this wonderful weekend and see why IU has received 'five stars' -- the highest rating possible -- for Bloomington's LGBT-friendly campus. We're anticipating another record crowd, including many university officials."
In addition to the film festival, weekend highlights include a Friday social at IU's Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center; a reception and silent auction Saturday at Grazie Italian Eatery; and a Sunday brunch.
The third annual GLBTAA Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented during the Friday social to Kimberly J. Davis, retired research associate and educational consultant from the Indiana Resource Center for Autism at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, and William C. Shipton, retired director for student programs and services in Department of Residential Programs and Services at IU Bloomington. The 2013 award went to Jerry J. Burgdoerfer, senior partner in the law firm Jenner & Block in Chicago.
"The GLBTAA remains one of our most active alumni groups, and this is an event that many look forward to every year," said J T. Forbes, executive director and CEO of the IU Alumni Association. "The group works to engage alumni from all eight IU campuses, to connect them with one another and back to their university. Our GLBT alumni truly make this a fabulous weekend, for all parts of the IU community."
The GLBT Alumni Association is an affiliate group of the IU Alumni Association. The IU Alumni Association is dedicated to bringing IU alumni, students and friends together to serve one another and IU. As one of the nation's largest alumni organizations, with more than 580,000 graduates worldwide, the IUAA provides many programs and services to its members, nonmember alumni and the university.
