IU Alumni Association to honor volunteers for service

  • April 29, 2014

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- During its annual Alumni Leaders Conference June 5 to 7, the Indiana University Alumni Association will honor six individuals for their service and volunteer leadership to the association.

Five will receive the IUAA President’s Award, established in 1993 to pay tribute to the organization's most dedicated alumni volunteers. It is the highest award given by the Alumni Association to a volunteer leader.

The IUAA also will present the Gertrude Rich Award, honoring the memory of the wife of Claude Rich, director of the IUAA from 1948 to 1968. It is given to a spouse or partner of an alumni leader who has exemplified the spirit of Gertrude Rich in making outstanding contributions to the IUAA.

The 2014 recipients of the IUAA President’s Award are:

Larry Alt, BS’68, MSBA’78

Alt, of Valparaiso, Ind., displays his passion for Indiana University in numerous ways, especially in his service to the Alumni Association. He was president of the IUAA Lakeshore Chapter in 2008-10 and is serving in that capacity again. Alt is a member of the IUAA Executive Council and serves on the association’s finance committee. He chairs the Lakeshore Chapter’s golf outing, which supports scholarships.

Alt has also become a familiar figure in the region as a local host for IU basketball games. The chapter honored Alt’s work as a fundraiser for local IUAA scholarships by naming one of the largest grants in his honor.

Jo Ann Bergman, BS’58, MS’71

When Jo Ann and John Bergman, of Melbourne, Fla., were approached in 2006 to help reorganize the Southwest Florida Chapter of the IUAA, they started with four people. After calling, emailing and writing letters to area alumni, they built a board of directors and began attracting more alumni to attend events and raise scholarship money. To date, more than 300 Southwest Florida alumni have attended at least one of the chapter’s events, and the chapter has raised nearly $20,000 for scholarships.

Called the driving force behind the chapter’s revitalization, Jo Ann has helped the chapter become proactive and award-winning.

Alice Jordan-Miles, BA’90, MS’97

At a time when the IU Latino Alumni Association needed unifying volunteer leadership, Jordan-Miles, of Fort Wayne, Ind., stepped up to the challenge. Her tenure of leadership in 2011-13 was marked by a series of robust initiatives and partnerships. Her Latino group enjoyed participation with the 2011 Fiesta Indianapolis Cultural Fair, the 2012 U.S. Hispanic Leadership Conference and a fall 2012 IULAA reunion and alumni/student networking symposium. She has continued to recruit alumni, and she works to achieve student retention and graduation of Latino/Latina students.

She has served on the IUAA Executive Council and was a board member with the IUAA Northeast Indiana Chapter. She is a current recommender with the IU Groups Scholars Program.

Leslie Zimmerman, BS’93

Zimmerman, of Basking Ridge, N.J., is a longtime IUAA volunteer. She served as a chapter officer and president of the Columbus Chapter in Ohio from 2000 until her recent move to New Jersey. Although deep in Buckeye country, she pulled together Hoosiers for years and has continued to keep people connected to one another and to IU. She served for three years on the IUAA Executive Council.

Zimmerman is a member of the 1854 Society and has contributed to the Jerry Tardy Operating Endowment for the DeVault Alumni Center. She is a life member of the IUAA and one of the organization’s strongest advocates for membership.  She also assists IU Athletics, the IU Varsity Club and other IU departments in planning and hosting events.

George Zundo, BA’76, DDS’80

Zundo, of Danville, Ill., has been an active IUAA volunteer for more than 20 years, beginning as a board member for the IU School of Dentistry Alumni Association. He has served on numerous committees and participated in activities, including helping to plan the Fall Dental Conference, the International Service Learning fundraising project for the IU School of Dentistry, Research Day, scholarship presentation and many other alumni board activities. He has served as a board officer, including a term as president.

He is a life member of the IUAA, has co-chaired the biennial alumni cruise for IU School of Dentistry and is a member of the Dean’s Society for major donors. He has been an instructor for the dental school and has received numerous awards and honors.

Gertrude Rich Award: Pat Williams, BS'60

Williams, of Bloomington, Ind., is the 2014 recipient of the Gertrude Rich Award. Williams, along with her late husband, Bob, has contributed to the enjoyment of many IUAA events over the years. Bob was a pianist, and Pat developed a narrative to go along with their musical tribute to the songs written by IU alumnus Hoagy Carmichael. Bob and Pat shared these performances all over the country. She still attends many IUAA and IU functions in support of the organization. Originally from Kokomo, Ind., she served as a vice chancellor for the IU Kokomo campus before moving to Bloomington.

The IU Alumni Association is dedicated to serving the university and its diverse alumni, students and friends. As one of the nation's largest alumni organizations, serving more than 580,000 graduates worldwide, the IUAA provides many programs and services to its members, nonmember alumni and the university.
