BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Emmy-nominated actress and Indiana University alumna Laverne Cox will speak during a live, virtual event at 8 p.m. April 9 as part of “The Style of the State,” a multidisciplinary IU symposium on art, culture and aesthetics in Indiana. Cox’s appearance will include a brief presentation and a moderated Q&A featuring questions from the audience.
Cox attended IU on a dance scholarship before transferring to Marymount Manhattan College. She is widely known for her role portraying Sophia Burset in “Orange Is the New Black” but is also celebrated for her work as an LGBTQ+ advocate.
Cox was the first trans woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream, scripted television show. She’s also an Emmy-winning documentary film producer. Her critically acclaimed documentary “Disclosure,” which details the history of trans representation in Hollywood, is streaming on Netflix.
”An Evening with Laverne Cox” and the symposium are presented by Platform: An Arts and Humanities Research Laboratory at IU Bloomington. The symposium will take place virtually April 9 and 10, with limited in-person sessions in the Gayle Karch Cook Center for Public Arts and Humanities on the Bloomington campus. Platform is supported by the Mellon Foundation, the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research, and the Indiana University Arts and Humanities Council.
“An Evening with Laverne Cox” is free and open to the public. People must register to attend the virtual event ahead of time.
