IU names Indianapolis Chamber president as VP for university relations

For Immediate Release Sep 22, 2022

INDIANAPOLIS – Michael Huber, currently serving as president/CEO of the Indianapolis Chamber, will join Indiana University as vice president for university relations.

Huber, who begins his role with the university on Oct. 17, will lead IU’s government relations efforts at the state and federal level as well as economic engagement, partnering with Indiana business leaders and communities to enhance the vitality of the state.

“Michael brings exceptional expertise in economic development that will propel our university forward,” IU President Pamela Whitten said. “His experience and leadership will undoubtedly make a vital impact in a critical aspect of the recently announced IU 2030, a framework for the university’s strategic planning process, as well as our ongoing engagement with state and federal legislators.”

During his near decade with the Indy Chamber, Huber led Indianapolis’ regional economic development strategy, including a five-year campaign resulting in more than $19 million in new funding for economic development.

“I’m inspired by President Whitten’s stated commitment to make Indiana University an economic engine for the entire state,” Huber said. “I see unlimited potential in today’s environment for collaboration between the public sector, the private sector and academia, and I can’t think of a better platform to do that than Indiana University.”

Prior to his role at the Chamber, he was senior director of commercial enterprise at the Indianapolis Airport Authority, and previously served as deputy mayor for economic development under former Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard. In this role, Huber managed projects involving water utilities, the city’s parking system and the CityWay partnership with Eli Lilly.

Huber has served as an associate faculty member in the IU O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and partnered with the IU Kelley School of Business at IUPUI to develop the Enterprise Corps Program, a partnership between the Indy Chamber and the Kelley School to expand resources to small businesses.

In addition, Huber earned a Master of Business Administration from the Kelley School of Business.

Huber succeeds Bill Stephan, who announced his departure earlier this year after 20 years of service and will officially retire in October.
