Indiana University’s Center for Learning Analytics and Student Success (CLASS) is pleased to announce this year’s cohort of Learning Analytics Fellows.
This year, a cohort of 13 faculty will conduct scholarly research projects using data and student learning analytics to foster student engagement, retention, and success at Indiana University. The Learning Analytics Fellows grants are provided to further student achievement and success at the course, program, or institutional levels and are open to all full-time IUB instructors, regardless of rank.
Two types of grants are available. The From Insights to Action (FIAC) grant is designed for faculty teams to use data to create actionable plans to improve student success within a given department or program. The Learning Analytics Fellows grant is available to individual faculty members for questions they may have about their course or program.
This year a team from SPEA was awarded their second FIAC grant. The grant will allow them to extend their analysis of how temporal gaps between lower and upper-level courses can impact student performance and retention. The SPEA team includes Alexander Alexeev, Cheryl Hughes, Roger Morris, and Susan Siena.
Individual Learning Analytics Fellows grants were awarded to Karen Banks (Kelley), Corrin Clarkson (Math), Jim Davis (Medical Sciences), Dan Grundman (SPEA), Yuri Kim (Geology), Jie Li (Kelley), and Emily Esola and Joe Morgan (Kelley).
“Each year of the program, significant progress has been made in the way we understand and improve student success through the use of analytical data,” said George Rehrey, the director of CLASS. “And the most exciting thing is how each year Fellows uncover new questions that can be answered with the data.”
CLASS funds faculty research annually through a proposal selection process. Since 2015, the center has funded 82 faculty members. In any given year, approximately 5 million records generated by 110,000 students are available to the Fellows for their scholarly research.
