Indiana University students with an interest in law school are invited to participate in Law Day, which will be hosted by the IU Health Professions and Prelaw Center (HPPLC) on October 4 at the Indiana Memorial Union. The event is free and open to the general public.
Admissions representatives and law students from over 110 ABA-accredited schools from all over the country will be in Alumni Hall from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., answering questions and providing information on admissions, academics, financial aid and lifestyle at their institutions.
In addition, deans of admission from three top law schools will participate in Q&A at a panel discussion in the Wittenberger Auditorium from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m., providing a rare opportunity for students to request and receive important information about applying to law school from senior admissions officials.
“Law Day is the most important event of the year for students interested in law school,” Prelaw Advisor Jake Rossman of the Indiana University Health Professions and Prelaw Center said. “For law schools, Law Day is an opportunity to meet our students where they live and provide the kind of face-to-face interaction they could only get by visiting a faraway campus. I can’t think of a better opportunity for both students and law schools to do the things they need to help them make informed decisions about where to go and how to apply.”
Prelaw students can expect to face increasing competition for law school seats. Applications rose eight percent last year, while admissions dropped over three percent, according to data from the American Bar Association, a trend that will likely continue in 2020. At IU-Bloomington, applications for Maurer School of Law increased 10 percent while acceptances fell 5 percent over the same period.
HPPLC estimates that roughly 4,000 IU students from all majors are interested in law. Law Day is designed to provide students at every step of the exploration and application process with essential information on attending law school.
