“Alyvia (Luce) is a natural leader of our team, inside and outside of the court,” said IU Columbus Head Volleyball Coach Jose Olivo. “That’s why she is one of the captains. She is a very passionate and resilient player.”
Alyvia Luce came to IU Columbus in 2023 to become part of the first-ever Crimson Pride volleyball team and earn her degree in education. And she’ll tell you she’s found a place where she can thrive.
Luce came from a huge high school, so it’s been a pleasant change to have classes of 15 students and professors who all know her personally. She’s always wanted to be a teacher and loves that she gets to do field work and jump into the classroom—as an underclassman!
Though Crimson Pride athletics was still in its infancy and the volleyball program completely unknown, Coach Olivo signed her to the first-year program based on his infectious enthusiasm. Luce immediately felt his genuine care for his players’ wellbeing.
“He treats us like his daughters,” Luce said of her coach. “And he can really read the room, like if we’re stressed because we have a lot of homework or if we’re hurting, he can sense it and wants to help.”
Luce added that some of her teammates have jobs or are in rigorous academic programs, and Coach Olivo is willing to work around their schedules—which is rare. “He’s very considerate of our time and sees us as people, not just athletes,” she emphasizes.
When Alyvia committed to IU Columbus, she joined with her high school rival, Maddie Hunter. “I told her, ‘I’ll join if you join,’ then we know the back row will be good!”
The two have roomed together at the Annex since the start, and Luce loved that she got to live in an apartment her freshman year instead of a tiny dorm room.
In addition, Hunter and Luce coached a nearby travel team in the off-season and played together—every set of every game—last year for the Crimson Pride. “We were definitely underestimated last year, as an unknown all-freshman team, with several injured players, we fought very hard!”
Luce notes that this year, she welcomes the bigger roster, diverse set of talents, and is happy to see the new players fitting in well. Luce herself feels more confident this year and relishes her role as co-captain and libero, designated passer, “Every ball is mine!” she said with a laugh.
“Alyvia is a very tenacious player. She always gives 100 percent in every practice and game,” Olivo said. “We are so happy to have her!”
