Google announces plans to retire classic sites.

Google is phasing out classic Google Sites, the underlying technology for groupspaces. There is no set retirement date yet, but groupspace owners are encouraged to adopt new Google Sites for web publishing. The form for creating new Google at IU groupspaces will be disabled on January 31.

If you currently use a groupspace, it will continue to exist and be supported until classic Google sites are retired. Owners of groupspaces will be contacted directly when a retirement date is announced.

For help converting Google groupspaces to the new Google Sites, contact your campus teaching and learning center, or your campus UITS Support Center.

The Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research (CACR) Speaker Series brings experts from across the nation to present their current research and real-world experiences to IU faculty, staff, and students.

• January 31: J.J. Thompson, founder and CEO of Rook Security, an Indianapolis-based IT security firm providing strategy, crisis management, and next-generation security operations services.

The Speaker Series takes place from 12-1pm in the Maurer School of Law and is live-streamed to Luddy Hall and the ICTC at IUPUI.

CEWiT web design groups are here to help.

Faculty in all disciplines benefit from an online presence, but female faculty are less likely to have a personal website than men. The Center of Excellence for Women in Technology (CEWiT) is facilitating faculty web design groups to help design personal or lab websites and to provide the dedicated time and space necessary to build a page.

Interested faculty members will be placed in groups based on availability. Groups will meet every two weeks at the CEWiT house, 501 N. Park Avenue, in Bloomington.

Learn about topics ranging from 3D object acquisition to virtual reality for teaching and art education, presented by a host of experts from the UITS Advanced Visualization Lab and the Cyberinfrastructure for Digital Humanities & Creative Activities group.

The format of the weekly series at IU Bloomington includes hands-on introductions to topics, lectures by people doing cutting-edge work at IU, and open sessions for exploring your questions and approaches.

January 16 session to focus on the medium of virtual reality. 

As virtual reality continues to advance, so does the number of VR users and producers. In this series, part of the Supercomputing for Everyone series, the UITS Advanced Visualization Lab (AVL) examines how the medium of virtual reality has proven to be useful in fields from education and training to science and design.

Workshops take place in one of IU Bloomington’s Reality Labs, equipped with several VR stations ready for exploration and use. In this session of the weekly series, Bill Sherman, senior technology advisor in Research Technologies, will present a program on the medium of virtual reality.
