Everyday life is different now, and the new normal is unfamiliar, uncertain, and largely unknown, and our campuses feel vacant. For UITS, we’ve been challenged in ways we never imagined, however, we are committed to making sure you have the resources you need to keep going, that researchers continue to seek answers, make discoveries and find solutions, and that we deliver a world-class education.

What happens to your student accounts, data, and software when you leave IU?

Congratulations to our bicentennial graduates! Though you’ve packed up your physical belongings, be aware you may also need to transport your data and software as well. Here are some helpful hints about managing your student accounts as you leave IU.

• Your university accounts will remain active for now, but keep in mind, they will be disabled after two consecutive terms in which you are not enrolled.
• Bills, transcripts, and additional university information will still be accessible.
• Make plans to retain data from accounts where you saved information, including Box, Google at IU, Office 365, Adobe, and Canvas.
• You will be able to retain access to university-distributed software as long as it’s already installed on your computer, however, once you are no longer enrolled, you will not be able to download university software. 
• Check out benefits available to you as an IU Alumni Association member.

Managing your student accounts as you leave IU

We’ve hired movers—tell us where to put your data by May 22.

IU is preparing to retire Box cloud storage in the coming months, and we’ve hired movers. A company called SkySync will migrate your personal data currently stored in Box to either Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive. You get to choose which one.

• To move to Microsoft OneDrive: Do nothing. Your personal Box files will be moved to Microsoft OneDrive.
• To move to Google Drive: Fill out this “Find your drive” survey by May 22. Simply select Google Drive.

Whichever you choose, most of us will end up working with both storage options because of collaborating with colleagues.

One week prior to migration of your data, you will receive an email, so you’ll know when to expect the change. Files and links in Box will retain read-only access through March 2021.

• For Departmental, Organization, or Box Entrusted accounts: Be on the lookout for additional information about how non-personal Box accounts will be migrated.

Ensure proper pronunciation with NameCoach.

What’s in a name? Plenty, especially if you’re participating in a virtual graduation, interviewing for jobs, or meeting new classmates. All staff, faculty, and students at IU have access to NameCoach, a tool for recording your name so others can learn how to pronounce it.

Names can be recorded on your mobile device, a computer microphone, or over the phone, then made available:

• From your email signature
• On social media (Linkedin, etc.)
• Anywhere you choose to share your NameBadge

Now your NameBadge will also appear in the IU Directory after you’ve made the recording. You can even show some school spirit with a crimson NameBadge. So, what are you waiting for—go make a name for yourself!

UITS donates iPads to IU Health and area senior living communities.

Several Bloomington area seniors are more connected to family and friends during the COVID-19 crisis thanks to a recent effort by UITS. Surplus iPads have been delivered to IU Health and area senior living communities, enabling grateful patients and elderly residents to videoconference with loved ones.

Inspired by a similar project in Italy, UITS prepared surplus devices for donation to area facilities. “These devices were collecting dust because they were too outdated to be used by IU faculty, staff, and students. On the other hand, the iPads we donated are providing much-needed communication between isolated and lonely seniors and patients and their families,” said Joe Husk, Executive and Internal Technology Support group manager.

Facilities that received the iPads were: IU Health Bloomington Hospital, Autumn Hills Assisted Living, Brookdale Senior Living, and Hearthstone Health Campus. As more devices become available, UITS will continue to distribute to area senior facilities.

Registration is open and there is no cost to attend. 

Teach, Play, Learn, IU’s annual academic conference on game-based teaching and learning, will now take place online June 26, 10am-4pm. Due to the change, there will be no cost to attend the virtual conference.

The Teach, Play, Learn conference explores how games and play can be effective tools for learning. Topics include:

• Changing technologies and pedagogies in the quickly evolving area of educational games and playful learning
• Benefits of using games as part of classroom education
• Practical solutions for the design and implementation of games in the educational context
