Rob Lowden named new VP for IT and CIO
Brad Wheeler returns to Kelley faculty; Stacy Morrone appointed deputy CIO.
Indiana University President Michael McRobbie has announced that Brad Wheeler will be retiring from his administrative roles and returning to the faculty in the IU Kelley School of Business, which he joined in 1996. Wheeler is currently serving as IU’s vice president (VP) for information technology (IT) and chief information officer (CIO), and VP for communications and marketing.
McRobbie also announced that Rob Lowden will succeed Wheeler as VP for IT and CIO and that Karen Ferguson Fuson has been named to replace Wheeler as VP for communications and marketing. Additionally, Anastasia “Stacy” Morrone has been appointed deputy CIO. Ferguson will start her new position on July 6 and Lowden and Morrone will begin on Aug. 3.
A native Hoosier and a Navy veteran, Lowden currently serves as the executive associate dean and CIO for the IU School of Medicine and concurrently as associate vice president for health technology services reporting to Wheeler.
Box migrations are ramping up
Individually owned file migration has started.
Migrations of individually owned files and folders are underway. Box users will receive a seven-day notice and a one-day reminder in advance of their migration.
Please note: current non-individual (group) and Box Entrusted Data Account (BEDA) owners will have a separate process to request the preferred service. This way we can ensure that each new environment has the needed security attributes and appropriate people/accounts have the access needed.
We will keep you informed when it is time to migrate non-individual (group) accounts. For details on the Box migration, visit:

New secure storage options available
Microsoft and Google offer secure and non-individual (group) storage to replace Box.
Following the migration of individually owned files and folders, UITS will begin the migration of group accounts. Box Health will move to Microsoft at IU Secure Storage. BEDA, Organizational Accounts and non-individual (group) accounts will be moved last. We will keep you informed when it is time to migrate non-individual (group) accounts.
In the meantime, if you need new, non-individual (group) or secure storage those will be available on the Microsoft and Google platforms. The four new storage options for non-individual (group) files will be:
- Microsoft Teams at IU
- Microsoft at IU Secure Storage
- Google at IU Shared Drives
- Google at IU Secure Storage
Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio announce partnership in the fight against COVID-19
Research and education networks team up to aid communities amid pandemic.
Research and education networks from Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio are collaborating to provide internet connectivity, digital infrastructure, and broadband expertise to support higher education, research, K-12 schools, and state and local governments as they cope with the COVID-19 health crisis.
This partnership recognizes that network availability is vital to living, learning, and working amid the coronavirus pandemic. The partnership has been facilitating the large-scale transition to online learning and remote working across the three states and supports rapidly formed, high-intensity, collaborative research at the states’ universities and other sites.
The partnership also supports researchers developing treatment protocols and cures against COVID-19.
IU part of mega study on effects of COVID-19 on higher education remote learning
Thousands of students and faculty to be surveyed in effort to gather data for future eLearning efforts.
Almost overnight, roughly 20 million U.S. college students were faced with a new normal this spring: leave campus and finish all classes via remote learning. Necessary to stop the spread of the COVID-19 global pandemic, the abrupt switch in teaching methods will leave its mark on higher education, and one IU researcher is getting out in front to study the effects.
Ben Motz, director of the eLearning Research and Practice Lab, a unit within the Pervasive Technology Institute at IU, is principal investigator of the “Mega-Study of COVID-19 Impact in Higher Education.” Data will come from institutions within the Unizin Consortium, who are banding together to conduct a massive multi-institutional survey deployed to undergraduate students and their instructors.
Luddy researchers explore use of social robots to aid social distancing
Researchers study use of robots to support communication and mental health.
Researchers at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering are studying the use of social robots to support communication and mental health during social distancing.
Associate Professor of Informatics Selma Sabanovic and Sawyer Collins, a Ph.D. candidate in informatics, are conducting online surveys to get a better understanding of how people are connecting to friends and family during social distancing. They also are asking participants for input on how to improve the way social distancing robots look and act in social interactions.
