Most support services will be closed Nov. 24-25.
Happy Thanksgiving to the IU community from UITS. If you need IT support during the break, please be aware that UITS Support Center phone, email, chat, and walk-in services will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 24, and Thursday, Nov. 25. During that time, phone calls will be routed to the UITS Contact Center answering service. Walk-in locations will continue to be closed on Friday, Nov. 26, but phone, email, and chat support will re-open at 8am on Nov. 26.
The Tier 2 Support and CrimsonCard offices will be closed Nov. 24-26 and will resume normal hours on Monday, Nov. 29. The Herman B Wells Library CrimsonCard office is currently closed and will reopen on Monday, Nov. 29. When it does reopen, it will have new hours (Monday and Wednesday only, 8am-5pm).
If you are traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday, you can use IUanyWare, which allows you to run IU-licensed software applications without having to install them on your personal device.

Registration still open for LAN War 37
Dec. 4 gaming event features a bigger venue with room for everyone.
Giveaways, door prizes, free food, new hours, and a bigger venue are on tap for the LAN War 37 Dec. 4 gaming event.
The new venue is at the Intercollegiate Gym at 2721 E. 10th St. across from the Cyberinfrastructure Building (CIB) on the Bloomington campus. Complimentary food and drinks will be served in the CIB’s Wrubel Commons.
IU Gaming, in cooperation with UITS, has hosted LAN War since 1999.
Check IU Exchange Online Junk Email folder on a regular basis
Fine tune your spam filtering to avoid missing important emails that go to your junk folder.
Email in the Junk Email folder is automatically deleted after 30 days. IU Exchange Online email users are encouraged to check Junk Email folders regularly to avoid losing important messages that may wind up there due to spam algorithms. If a message ends up in a Junk Email folder by mistake, mark it as Not Junk, which over time will fine-tune Microsoft’s algorithms. Add further filtering, specific to your account, by using Safe Senders and Blocked Senders via Outlook or the Outlook Web App.
Please note that UITS is unable to say why a given email message was flagged as likely spam. Microsoft does not release its spam algorithms to prevent spammers from improving their spam techniques.

Proper storage of data avoids several pitfalls
Learn the difference between institutional and individual files.
If you separated from IU and no one else had access to your files, how would that impact your department or fellow collaborators? Or imagine what could happen if you stored sensitive data, such as personal identifiable information (PII) in a public folder. These scenarios are examples of why it’s important to store data correctly.
Choose where to store your files depending on whether they are individual, such as family photos, your resume, or personal tax documents, or institutional work files.
UITS has created a request institutional storage form to aid you in properly storing and securing data and to help you prevent oversharing of files. Use this form every time you need to store institutional data in Microsoft or Google storage.
Nov. 19 proposal deadline for Statewide IT Conference
The in-person event takes place April 11-13, 2022.
Presentation proposals are being accepted through Nov. 19 for the 26th annual Statewide IT Conference, April 11-13, 2022. UITS is excited to see attendees in person in Bloomington at the IU Auditorium and the Indiana Memorial Union.
UITS is also seeking nominations for IT Leadership Community Technologist Recognition Awards through Dec. 31.
Inaugural Digital Gardener Summit tackles digital literacy
Digital literacy critical to preparing students for increasingly digital environments.
More than 120 IU faculty, staff, and other thought leaders came together on Oct. 1 for the first Digital Gardener Summit held in a hybrid format at IUPUI’s Hine Hall and online. The Digital Gardener Initiative aims to prepare IU students for an increasingly digital world.
Faculty members interested in digital literacy can apply to be a Digital Gardener Faculty Fellow, a semester-long opportunity to learn to integrate digital literacy into courses and teaching. Apply through Dec. 5 for spring 2022.
