Watch for tech updates in the Monitor every other week

Welcome to the fall 2024 semester. We’re the Monitor, a bi-weekly University-required tech newsletter you can’t unsubscribe from. Are we “hip?” Are we “with it?” Are we “third outdated slang term?” Of course not!

But we do offer useful information you need to know like what to do when your computer breaks (contact your campus IT Support Center), how to hook up your gaming console in your dorm (see #3), is there a site that lists IU’s technology services I can bookmark and then forget about until I’m panicking at 3am (visit the Getting Started Student Guide)?

Tech at IU is constantly evolving to help students do their best work, and we invite you to be a part of that expereince.

CrimsonCard, your key to campus

CrimsonCard is the official photo ID for IU. You’ll use it to access your dorm, buildings, labs, and your meal plan—if you have one. You’ll swipe it when printing, attending events, taking tests, or using the fitness center. You can even put money on it and use it as payment on and off campus including on the Grubhub app!

Friendly reminder: beware of phishing

New students are especially susceptible to phishing emails, but everyone at IU is vulnerable. These emails can come from a variety of sources, even other IU accounts that have been phished, and can try to steal a range of personal information.

How to hook up your gaming console or smart TV

Register your gaming system, smart TV, or streaming device before connecting to IU PublicNet. For wireless connection, find your console/smart TV’s wireless MAC address. Go here for wired connection. If you need help, contact the Support Center.

Accessibility resources

IU is making strides to be a more accessible in-person and online campus for all students. From providing assistive technologies to making digital resources such as PDFs, course materials, and remote meetings more accessible for people with disabilities, IU has a variety of resources in one place.

Passphrase sharing. Don’t do it.

Your IU passphrase provides access to all your IU accounts like IU Login, email, Canvas, and One.IU. Do not share your passphrase with anyone, this includes but is not limited to your parents, roommates, friends, aspiring archenemies, Romeo and Juliet-style star-crossed loves, and anyone who owes you a life debt. However, you can grant parents or guardians third-party access so they can pay your bursar bill.

Hardware discounts and no-cost software for you

Did you know that IU students have access to hardware discounts and no-cost software? IU has teamed up with Apple and Dell to offer computers, electronics, and accessories at a discount. You are also eligible for no-cost software downloads from Adobe, IUware, and Microsoft 365. You can stream applications to your device by visiting IUanyWare.

Wi-Fi calling

Wi-Fi calling is a carrier-provided feature that will improve your experience making phone calls and sending text messages while in IU buildings. Especially when you’re in a limestone building, let’s say, Wi-Fi calling will enhance your call experience on your mobile phone.
