Expert Bio

David P. King is the Karen Lake Buttrey Director of the Lake Institute on Faith and Giving and an associate professor of philanthropic studies in the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. He is an expert on religious organizations, having conducted the largest survey of congregations’ economic practices in over a generation.

King has also investigated the evolving understandings of religious identity, international development and public policy within the history of international relief and development organizations. He is the author of the recent book “God’s Internationalists: World Vision and the Age of Evangelical Humanitarianism” (UPenn Press 2019) that traces the almost 70-year history of World Vision, the world’s largest Christian humanitarian organization. He remains broadly focused on any issue engaging religion and philanthropy.

He is the co-editor with Philip Goff of another forthcoming volume from Indiana University Press (2020) on religion and philanthropy in the United States. He is passionate about research and teaching, but as an ordained minister having served local churches and national faith-based organizations, he is also fueled by facilitating conversations with faith leaders, donors and fundraisers of all generations around the intersections of faith and giving.
