Expert Bio

Dr. Domenick T. Zero is the director of the Oral Health Research Institute and a tenured professor in the Department of Cariology, Operative Dentistry and Dental Public Health. His current research interests include evaluation of the clinical anticaries efficacy of topical fluorides, non-fluoride remineralization agents, new early caries diagnostic systems, caries-associated virulence properties of dental biofilms and salivary diagnostics.

As a principal investigator, he has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health and private industry. He has published more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and book chapters and over 200 abstracts.

Zero currently serves as chair of Clinical Practice Guidelines Oral Working Group, Sjögren's Syndrome Foundation, and as a member of the ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry's Expert Panel for the ADA Clinical Practice Guideline on Caries Management. He is a founding board member of the International Caries Detection and Assessment System Foundation and the recently formed American Academy of Cariology.

After receiving his dental degree from Georgetown University in 1975, Zero completed a general dentistry residency at the Eastman Dental Center and then a three-year research fellowship leading to a master's degree from the University of Rochester in 1979.
