Expert Bio

Lucia Wocial is the nurse ethicist and program leader in Nursing Ethics for the Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics (FCME) at IU Health, where she leads the Unit Based Ethics Conversation program and is a faculty mentor for the clinical ethics fellowship. Her current research focuses on moral distress of professional caregivers, with a particular interest on clinicians who practice in the in-patient setting.

She is the project director for the Woltman Inter-professional Communication Project with the IU School of Nursing, where she is an adjunct assistant professor. She is a junior associate faculty for Vital Talk and leads the IMPACT program at IU Health, which is a communication skills training program specifically designed to help direct-care nurses develop skills in conversations around palliative and end-of-life care. She also co-chairs the ethics consultation service sub-committee at IU Health and is a certified Healthcare Ethics Consultant.

Wocial has been a registered nurse since 1985. She practiced in neonatal intensive care for more than 20 years, both as a staff nurse and as a certified clinical nurse specialist. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.
