Helen Sanematsu

Expert Bio

Helen Sanematsu is an associate professor of visual communication design at the Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI; her community-based research includes designing interactions for in the Latino community in Indianapolis. She has also taught at the California Institute of the Arts and at Parsons in New York City.

She has worked at Martha Stewart Living magazine as an art director. She has taught trans-disciplinary studio courses with students from Tokyo, and has led studios for major corporations and the United Nations.

She graduated from Occidental College with an AB degree and from the Yale School of Art with an MFA degree in graphic design.

Areas of Expertise

Participatory design with an emphasis in community development; co-design and public health education; pedagogy; and design and ethics.
