Expert Bio

Irit Dekel is an assistant professor in Germanic studies and Jewish studies. Her work focuses on the relations between collective memory, media and the public sphere, particularly on Holocaust memorialization and the representation of ethnic and religious difference in contemporary Germany, using ethnography as well as discourse analysis. Dekel’s research has additionally raised questions on the intersection of nationalism and pluralism.

She has studied the circumcision debate in, and Israeli migration to, Germany, as well as home historical museums’ representation of women, racism and antisemitism.
