Expert Bio

Alberto Varon is an associate professor of English and director of the Latino Studies Program in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington. His research focuses on questions of citizenship, race, and representation in American cultures.

Varon is a scholar of Latinx writing cultures from the 19th century to the present and an expert in Latinx writing and popular cultures. He regularly teach courses in American, Latinx and ethnic American cultures. He takes an interdisciplinary approach that examines the interplay of culture, literature and representation across national and ethic groups. He is currently writing a book on contemporary Latinx opera. In addition to directing IU Bloomington's Latino Studies Program, Varon is editor of the interdisciplinary ChiricĂș Journal: Latina/o Literature, Arts, and Cultures.
