Expert Bio

Herb Fertig has been a professor of physics at IU since 2004. He is interested in the theoretical physics of many-particle systems, particularly in low dimensions. Such systems — particularly their realizations in electronic materials — support a broad variety of phenomena and states: the quantum Hall effect, metal-insulator transitions, electron crystals, highly correlated metals, superconductivity, and quantum magnetism.

He previously served on the faculty of the University of Kentucky, from 1991 to 2004. He has a Ph.D. from Harvard and did postdoc work at the University of Maryland.

Areas of Expertise

Physics, condensed matter physics, materials physics, electronic properties of materials, magnetism.
