Expert Bio

Brian Powell, the James H. Rudy Professor in the Department of Sociology at Indiana University Bloomington, focuses his research on family sociology, sociology of education, gender and sexuality.

He is the lead author of the award-winning book “Counted Out: Same-Sex Relations and Americans’ Definitions of Family” and is currently working on his next book, “Sponsoring the Next Generation,” which explores Americans’ views regarding the role of parents, children and the government in college funding.

He is the recipient of multiple teaching and research awards, most recently the American Sociological Association’s Distinguished Career Award for the study of family.
