Expert Bio

Mark Messier earned his Ph.D. at Boston University, studying a class of fundamental particles called neutrinos using the Super-Kamiokande experiment in Japan -- work that would later be recognized with the awarding of the Nobel Prize in physics to Takaaki Kajita in 2015 and the Breakthrough Prize in physics in 2016. Following a research position at Harvard University, Messier joined the IU faculty in physics in 2002. For the past 10 years, he has served as spokesperson for the NOvA collaboration, which uses a massive 14,000 ton detector to study neutrinos produced at the Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory.
