Expert Bio

David A. McDonald is an associate professor in the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology at Indiana University. Since 2000, McDonald has worked closely with Palestinian refugee communities dispersed throughout Israel, Jordan and the Occupied Territories.

He is author and editor of two books, “My Voice Is My Weapon: Music, Nationalism, and the Poetics of Palestinian Resistance” (2013) and “Palestinian Music and Song: Expression and Resistance Since 1900” (2013). His research focuses on the dynamics of music, violence and social protest.

Areas of Expertise

Music and violence, protest songs, Israeli/Palestinian conflict, refugee issues and forced migration, expressive cultural practices in the Arab world.
