Expert Bio
Lauren Smith is an assistant professor in The Media School at Indiana University and the associate director of research for the National Sports Journalism Center. Smith's research encapsulates both mass and social media. This focus has enabled her to complete research that focuses on issues of gender, race and national identity. She primarily examines how athletes are portrayed in the media and how new technologies enhance a fan's enjoyment of a game. She is the current chair of the International Association for Communication and Sport and the research co-chair for the Sports Communication Interest Group of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
