Type 2 diabetes is a complex multifactorial disease with a strong polygenic basis. However, environmental and lifestyle factors also play a significant role in disease development. Emerging studies are showing that epigenetic mechanisms explain the interaction between environment and genes, and contribute to the pathogenesis of the disease. Nuria Morral's research is focused on understanding how nutrients and hormones influence gene expression, and elucidating basic mechanisms that lead to hepatic insulin resistance. To address these fundamental questions, Morral is using animal models of diabetes and gene transfer using helper-dependent adenoviral vectors.View full bio
