Expert Bio

Dr. Joan Duwve is the associate dean for public health practice at the Fairbanks School of Public Health on the IUPUI campus. She also serves the state of Indiana as the chief medical officer at the Indiana State Department of Health.

Locally, she serves on the State Child Fatality Review Team, Mental Health and Addiction Prevention Advisory Committee, and State Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force with the attorney general. At the national level, Duwve is the chair of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials' Senior Deputies Committee and a member of the CDC Injury Center National Board of Scientific Counselors.

Duwve championed the expansion of school immunization requirements in Indiana, resulting in a doubling of Indiana’s adolescent immunization rates in three years. She worked on a multidisciplinary team to develop policies for opioid prescribing for chronic, nonterminal pain, which reduced prescribing in the state by 16 percent.
