Expert Bio

David L. Smiley is a senior lecturer in the Department of Health & Wellness Design in the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington, whose research focuses on student engagement, particularly as it relates to the use of technology and the use of simulations in an active learning environment. As the current coordinator of the core curriculum in the Department of Health & Wellness Design, he is involved in the overall direction and development of the undergraduate core program.

His secondary research area is the interaction between golf and cognitive decline. Golf is an activity that has been shown to have a positive impact on cognitive decline and the research in this area is in its infancy. His interest is in golf-based intervention in delaying cognitive decline in healthy older adults.

Smiley received his B.S. from the Pennsylvania State University and his M.S. from the University of Central Florida. He has received numerous pedagogical awards and grants, including the School of Public Health Trustees Teaching Award. He also is highly involved in community engagement and has served on the Board of Directors of My Sister’s Closet and currently serves as the vice president of the board of Visit Bloomington.
