Expert Bio

Joan Haase is the Holmquist Professor in Pediatric Oncology and co-director of the IUPUI Signature Center for Research in Palliative/End-of-Life Care and Training (the RESPECT Center). She is the world's leading pioneer in resilience in children, adolescents and young adults (AYA) with severe and chronic illnesses and their families.

Haase led the field in creating the first-ever resilience in illness model and in identifying, adapting and testing measures to capture concepts in the model. Her Resilience in Illness Model (RIM) has made international impact: It was adapted as the guiding framework for the Children's Oncology Group Nursing Discipline Committee. She is the founder of the the Asian Resilience Enhancement for AYA (AREA) Cooperative Group that is evaluating the RIM across five Asian countries, with plans to expand.

Haase is also an expert in pediatric palliative and end-of-life communication. She has mentored many interprofessional doctoral and postdoctoral fellows in qualitative methods, model development, instrumentation, and conduct of randomized clinical trials of interventions focused on resilience and palliative and end-of-life communication.
