Exemplary Teaching Conference at IU School of Education open to all teachers

Mar 29, 2017

H. Richard Milner IV, a leading thinker on race, poverty and equity in school, will be the featured speaker for the Exemplary Teaching Conference, which the Indiana University School of Education will host on March 31. All teachers are invited to attend.

The half-day conference includes a variety of speakers and breakout sessions, giving teachers an opportunity to share stories with their peers and hear about current issues facing the education world.

“The Exemplary Teaching Conference gives educators a chance to learn from each other, as pre-service teachers share their best projects from field experiences and IU courses,” said Keith Barton, associate dean for undergraduate studies. “Those attending the conference will come away with new ideas and new colleagues.”

Milner’s keynote topic will be “Rac(e)ing to Class: We Are in this Together!” The Helen Faison Endowed Chair of Urban Education at the University of Pittsburgh School of Education, he will examine pervasive structural and social policies that shape educators’ mindsets, discuss how teachers can support instructional practices that address race and poverty in meaningful ways, and share what “successful” schools and districts do to meet the needs of underserved students.

The Exemplary Teaching Conference begins at 9 a.m. in the atrium of the Wright Education Building at IU Bloomington. The conference is free of charge, and no advance registration is necessary.

Catherine Hageman is the communications manager at the School of Education.
