INDIANAPOLIS – Students at three Indianapolis high schools – Arsenal Technical, Pike and Providence Cristo Rey – in a unique information technology program will present end-of-the-year projects to parents, industry leaders and guests.

The projects relate to the students’ study of the internet of things and data visualization.

The presentations are scheduled as follows:

  • May 16: 1-2 p.m. at Pike High School, 5401 W. 71st St.
  • May 17: 5-6:30 p.m. at Providence Cristo Rey High School, 75 N. Belleview Place.
  • May 25: 9-10:15 a.m. at Arsenal Technical High School, 1500 E. Michigan St.

The students are part of a workforce-development initiative with the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis called Informatics Diversity-Enhanced Workforce, or iDEW.

Program partners include the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, Interactive Intelligence Foundation, JPMorgan Chase & Co., the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, the Care Institute Group, the Cummins Foundation, the Nicholas H. Noyes Jr. Memorial Foundation, the R.B. Annis Educational Foundation, the IU Foundation Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council and Old National Bank.

Launched in 2015, iDEW teaches information technology skills to prepare the students for academic and future career opportunities in the IT industry.

One of the students said of the program: “Honestly, I was never really interested in anything that had to do with computers. However, after the first semester of being in Introduction to Computer Science, I realized that I genuinely enjoyed the class and the things that were being taught. Being in the iDEW program has helped me recognize my interest in the field of technology and let me witness all the different opportunities that are offered to people like me.”
