BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University received $461.8 million in total private individual and institutional philanthropy in fiscal year 2017, the Indiana University Foundation has announced. This includes over $168 million in nongovernmental grants and over $293 million in private philanthropy (i.e. contributions from individuals, businesses and foundations).

The vast majority of donors specify how they would like to have their gifts used. In fiscal year 2017, donors chose to fund a wide array of initiatives within the scope of academic programs, student scholarships and financial aid, faculty support and research, and facilities.
This is the fourth consecutive year that philanthropic giving has exceeded targeted goals of For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign, the first university-wide funding campaign in IU’s history. It is also the third consecutive year that philanthropic support has exceeded $400 million.
“The IU Foundation is devoted to helping the university honor its past and help provide the support that will create opportunities for generations to come,” IU Foundation President Dan Smith said. “We are fortunate to have so many friends who support our mission. Their kindness and generosity will have a vast impact on the citizens in our great state and beyond.”
Since its launch in 2012, over 266,000 donors have participated in the For All campaign. Notable gifts from the past fiscal year include:
- A $30 million gift from Don Brown to establish an immunotherapy center at the IU School of Medicine.
- A $10 million anonymous gift to support students at the Kelley School of Business and Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.
- A substantial gift from the Tanis Family to benefit students and faculty at the College of Arts and Sciences, Eskenazi Museum of Art and Lilly Library.
- A $7.7 million gift from Milt and Judi Stewart to endow the Maurer School of Law’s Center on the Global Legal Profession.
- A $6 million gift from Ralph Walter for an array of scholarships and endowed chairs in multiple parts of the College of Arts and Sciences.
- A $1.68 million gift from the Vera Z. Dwyer Trust to establish an endowed chair in palliative care at IU South Bend.
As of the end of fiscal year 2017, the For All campaign is two-thirds of the way to completion, set to end December 2019 to coincide with IU’s 2020 bicentennial celebration. Campaign funds raised to date provide support for IU’s students, faculty and programs through 2,716 scholarships, 120 graduate fellowships, and 123 endowed chairs and professorial positions. These investments create access and opportunities for many deserving students that would otherwise be unattainable, and help outstanding faculty pursue ideas that fuel life-changing discoveries.
For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign is taking place on all IU-administered campuses including IU Bloomington, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, IU East, IU Kokomo, IU Northwest, IU South Bend and IU Southeast.
