After serving in the general counsel’s office for more than 20 years, Kiply Drew will become the new chief policy officer at Indiana University starting April 1.
In this role, Drew will oversee the university’s highly regarded procedures and practices for ensuring that all university policies are understandable, readily accessible and adopted through transparent procedures. The chief policy officer also assists university offices and the University Faculty Council in developing policies that cut across functional areas of the university’s activities.
“I am so pleased to announce Kip taking on the role of chief policy officer,” said John Applegate, executive vice president for University Academic Affairs. “With her excellent legal background and broad experience with IU, she is uniquely qualified to oversee policy administration. She will also be of great assistance with the legal and compliance issues that our office regularly encounters.”
Drew brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Since 1994, she has been a part of IU’s Office of the Vice President and General Counsel, beginning her tenure as an associate general counsel. In her current position as senior associate general counsel, Drew focused primarily on the First Amendment, Title IX, faculty affairs, construction law and complex contracts.
As she moves to the Office of the Executive Vice President for University Academic Affairs, she will use this experience as well as the relationships she’s built in Bloomington and across the regional campuses.
“Kip has been an integral part of the Office of the General Counsel for over 20 years,” said Jacqueline Simmons, vice president and general counsel. “My colleagues and I are very glad that we will have many opportunities to continue to work with her in her new role.”
“I am gratified to have the opportunity to advance the mission of Indiana University as its chief policy officer,” Drew said. “I have been honored to serve as one of IU’s counsel for the last 23 years and will continue to draw upon my deep and treasured connections across IU’s campuses in my new role.”
As chief policy officer, Drew will chair the Policy Advisory Council, manage new policy initiatives, develop and coordinate universitywide policy administration, and provide guidance for legal and compliance matters in IU’s Public Safety and Institutional Assurance. She succeeds Jennifer Kincaid, who was appointed chief of staff and director of policy administration in 2008, and became the university’s first chief policy officer in 2014. Kincaid has been appointed the deputy executive director of IU Bloomington’s newly established Center for Rural Engagement.
Drew completed her J.D. cum laude at the IU Maurer School of Law and was editor-in-chief of the Indiana Law Journal. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Hanover College.
