BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Roberto Salinas-León, president of the Mexico Business Forum, will present the seventh annual Patrick O’Meara International Lecture at Indiana University.
He will speak on “Toward a Prosperous North American Partnership: Issues and Challenges” at 4 p.m. March 21 in Presidents Hall in Franklin Hall on the IU Bloomington campus. The lecture is free and open to the public. No tickets or advance registration is needed.
Salinas-León heads the Mexico Business Forum, based in Mexico City, where he works on projects involving policy analysis, investment advising and economics consulting. An authority on economics and trade policy, he has lectured around the world and testified before Congress on free trade, structural reform in Mexico and other issues.
“The expertise in Mexican business and economic policy that Dr. Salinas-León brings to his lecture and his many meetings with faculty members and students while he is here will serve IU well as we ramp up activity at our new Global Gateway office in Mexico City,” said David Zaret, IU vice president for international affairs.
Salinas-León has organized policy and academic forums in Mexico for the past 25 years, including the annual roundtable of the Economist Group, which he directed from 1997 to 2009. He is president of the Alamos Alliance, which organizes an annual economic and policy forum that hosts some of the most recognized names in economic policy in Latin America and the world.
He has published op-ed columns in The Wall Street Journal, The Journal of Commerce, Investor’s Business Daily, Barron’s and other publications. He was a weekly editorial columnist from 1993 to 2011 for El Economista and is occasional commentator for CNN, CNN Latin America, CNBC and the BBC.
He holds a B.A. from Hillsdale College in Michigan and an M.A. and Ph. D. in philosophy from Purdue University. He has been an adjunct and visiting professor at several universities in Mexico City and is senior debate fellow and debate lecturer at Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation in Vermont.
The O’Meara Lecture was established in 2011 to honor Patrick O’Meara, IU vice president emeritus of international affairs. It brings to the IU Bloomington campus distinguished speakers who address critical topics in international affairs. O’Meara served as IU’s ambassador to the world for more than four decades. A political scientist, he directed IU’s African Studies Program, was dean of international programs and was IU’s first vice president for international affairs.
For decades, IU has been a leader in international studies, teaching more foreign languages than almost any other American institution of higher education. It is home to area studies centers for every continent other than Antarctica.
