IUPUI will look to collectively shed its winter coat with the long-awaited opening of the Fitness Center within the Campus Center.

The 10,000-square-foot facility opened at 7 a.m. It’s located underneath Barnes & Noble on the theater level; the main entrance is next to the bookstore. The space used to be part of Barnes & Noble but has been transformed to hold dozens of pieces of workout equipment, exercise class studios, locker rooms, showers and offices. The space has a high level of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, with equipment able to fit wheelchair use.

On-campus residents have been able to use The Fitness Center since Feb. 12. Hundreds have worked out and returned. Matt Jones, IUPUI’s assistant director of competitive sports, said the reaction to the new space has been positive.

“They love it,” he said. “It’s something they wanted and something they’ve always needed and have been yearning for. Now they have it.”
