Conquer finals with last-minute tips

It’s that time of year. Finals week is almost upon us, and most of us need all the help we can get. Maybe you’re on top of things and have this in the bag, but if you don’t, here are a few tips to make this week a breeze.

1. Expanded library hours

Though the library usually closes around midnight on weeknights, finals week is a much-needed exception. On Sunday, April 29, University Library will begin extended hours, opening at 10 a.m. and closing at 2 a.m. From April 30 through May 3, the library will open at 7:30 a.m. and close at 2 a.m.

2. Pick a new place to study

Be it a chatty roommate, the availability of distractions or just the need for a change of scenery, there are lots of reasons to find a new place to study. Though the weather may not be cooperating enough for a study session in Taylor Courtyard, desks, cubbies and computers are tucked all over campus ready to help send you to success. Whether it be the lounges along the halls of Business/SPEA or the computer station on the second floor of Cavanaugh, getting outside your comfort zone can help you find renewed focus. Having unique memories associated with information is also a great way to help you remember.

3. Coffee, coffee and more coffee

If there ever was a time to pull out the emergency caffeine, now would be that time. The Campus Center’s own Caribou Coffee is ready to fuel your mornings, opening at 7 a.m. and closing at 6 p.m. If your coffee craving comes a little later, Monday through Thursday you can hit the Starbucks in Barnes and Noble at IUPUI as late as 8 p.m. Of course, if you’re willing to trek just a few minutes east of campus, Mo’Joe Coffeehouse is serving it up until 10 p.m. all week.

4. Rest and relaxation

One of the most underrated but necessary elements of finals week is rest. After all, you can’t study if you’re curled up into a ball of existential dread, having pushed yourself to the limit. If you’re mid-study session and find yourself feeling overwhelmed, take a minute to relax and reset. Try some breathing techniques, or simply remind yourself why it is you’re here at college in the first place. Remember to take periodic breaks – and to be kind to yourself. You’re doing your best.

5. Find your best study method

Before you stop procrastinating, take a look at these study tips and get some inspiration. Of course, only you know what works for you, and at a certain point, the best study buddy is a good night’s sleep. So give yourself a break, feeling confident in the knowledge that you’ve done all you can. You’ve got this.
