Grant writer joins IU ICO to help Indiana University researchers statewide

Amie Frame reviews opportunities and edits all parts of grant application packages

Researchers at all Indiana University campuses and regional academic centers can now work with a grant writer to tell their story in the clearest and most captivating way.

Amie Frame recently joined the IU Innovation and Commercialization Office in Indianapolis as a research associate and grant writer. Her duties include matching grant opportunities to the interests of university researchers and reviewing and editing grant application packages for external funding.

“I edit all components of a package, so on any given day, I might work on the administrative sections of a grant application like biographical sketches, budgets and support letters, or the larger scientific sections with the project narrative,” Frame said. “My work is prioritized based on agency deadlines.”

Bill Brizzard, executive director of IU ICO, said Frame’s expertise complements the work conducted by other experts in the office.

“Amie brings a new dimension to the services offered by ICO. We now have the capability to offer our inventors the services of a grant writer who can help with submission of proposals to fund the further development of their research. We are excited to have her on board,” Brizzard said.

Frame prefers to begin working on grant applications six to eight weeks before a submission deadline. She creates a development timeline to ensure thorough reviews of each component of a grant application package and a timely submission. She also works with the investigator’s department grant manager on budget development and the institution’s internal review process with the Office of Research Administration.

“The grant application process can be confusing, especially for new researchers, as many agencies have different requirements that change often,” Frame said. “It is easier to navigate the process with someone who has expertise in the overall grant application process and the particulars of different external funding agencies, including federal and nonprofit ones.”

Frame is a graduate of the IU School of Medicine, where she earned her master’s degree in public health.

“I enjoy learning about the diverse research interests of our faculty and how they are translating this research into improving people’s lives,” Frame said. “Working at IU ICO gives me the opportunity to be an invited guest among the research team and share in their research experiences. It is extremely rewarding to read about the research successes of IU faculty and know I played a part, no matter how small.”
