You’re halfway through the fifth week of the semester. You know the city like the back of your hand, you know where and when you can snag a good study spot, and you’re forming relationships that will last a lifetime.
You might even start to relax. Maybe let your guard down a little.
First mistake! Danger lurks where you least expect it, and it only takes a split second of indecision to strike.
Buckle up, kids – it’s Safety Week.
Guardian safety app
You’re always on your phone, even when you know you shouldn’t be. Why not multitask and download the Guardian safety app to remain ever vigilant? This app has all sorts of features to keep you safe on the go. Let’s check the top two:
- Safe Walk Timer: Register a friend’s or family member’s phone number as a “social guardian” to keep you safe on your travels. Set a timer for how long it should take you to walk to your destination, and if it goes off before you deactivate it, a text will be sent to your social guardian, even if they don’t have the app. Think of it as a race against time to avoid a call from your mother.
- IUPD – Tips Via Text: Spot something fishy? Follow the recommendation of “see something, say something” and send a tip to the IU Police Department. You can use your contact information or send anonymously.
Safety messaging
If something goes awry on campus, you can bet you’re going to hear about it. IU-Notify is the tool the university uses to reach out to all students and IU employees about any and all immediate danger. Let’s dive in to the three types of messages you might get:
- Emergency alerts: Whether it be by text, email or the old-fashioned phone call, alerts are sent when there is an immediate threat to campus. Anything from inclement weather to health hazards to criminal activity could be sent in an emergency alert.
- Crime notices: In accordance with the Clery Act, Indiana University is required to disclose information about crime on campus. Distributed by email only, it will contain a brief description of the crime that occurred and any information that you could use to help yourself.
- Public safety advisories: When there’s an issue facing campus that isn’t an immediate danger but needs to be communicated, a PSA will be sent to registered email addresses. For example, a rash of bicycle thefts doesn’t put you in danger, but you need to know to lock up your bike tighter tonight.
Indiana University has the tools to keep you safe and up to date, but it’s up to you to seek them out.
