Sixth annual Science Fest features interactive activities for kids

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University will welcome thousands of children, families and educators to the Bloomington campus for the sixth annual Science Fest. The university’s annual celebration of science features hundreds of hands-on, interactive activities to teach kids about science and get them excited about learning.

The event is free and open to the public. School groups and other large organizations are encouraged to attend.

What: IU Science Fest, an annual family-friendly celebration of science featuring over 150 hands-on science activities in 25 scientific areas.

When: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.

Who: Faculty, staff and students from over 20 academic units in the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences, as well as several schools, including the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design and the IU School of Optometry, will lead the activities for children, families and educators.

Where: The majority of events will take place on the west side of the IU Bloomington campus in the Chemistry Building, Franklin Hall, Jordan Hall, Kirkwood Hall, Kirkwood Observatory, the Student Building and Swain Hall West. Some activities will occur outdoors in Dunn’s Woods, at Owen Hall Plaza or near the Sample Gates.

A complete list of activities, as well as an interactive map with color-coded symbols representing different scientific areas, is available. Visitors can also manage and print a custom schedule on the Science Fest website for help staying on track during the day’s activities.

Additional services will include on-site dining options from local food trucks, including B-Town Pizza, Chocolate Moose, Green Leaf, The Market Food Court, Sakura, Hoosier HomeStyle (breakfast only), Sugar & Spice and Starbucks, as well as a first-aid station for non-emergencies. Safety services are provided by Intra-Collegiate Emergency Medical Services, a student organization composed of over 100 certified EMT-Basics and first-aid personnel.

Free public parking is available in most campus garages on Saturdays and Sundays, unless otherwise posted, as well as three surface lots west of campus: the Von Lee Parking Lot and the lots at the corners of Fourth and Dunn streets and Sixth and Dunn streets.
