Trustees’ resolution commends ‘tremendous resolve’ of IU community

Apr 10, 2020

The Indiana University Board of Trustees has passed a special resolution marking the extraordinary effort of everyone throughout IU. The resolution noted the tremendous resolve of faculty, staff and students as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced all classes and most work completely online.

All IU campuses moved to remote instruction only after the last classes before spring break on March 13. IU President Michael A. McRobbie announced on March 23 that the remainder of the spring semester would be taught remotely. All IU campuses are now limited to only essential personnel on site, with all other work conducted remotely.

The resolution concludes, “the Trustees of Indiana University HIGHLY commend the university’s students, faculty, and staff for their resolve and determination, for the sacrifices they and their loved ones continue to make, and for their efforts, large and small, that will help all of us to weather this crisis.”

The complete resolution is below.

RESOLUTION of the Trustees of Indiana University

WHEREAS, the Trustees of Indiana University wish to commend the tremendous resolve demonstrated by the university’s faculty, staff, and students in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic, which has dramatically disrupted their lives and altered the daily operation of the university in ways almost unimaginable a few months ago; and

WHEREAS, IU faculty and staff have worked quickly and tirelessly, with great flexibility and positive spirit, to safeguard our campuses and to ensure that students’ academic progress continues unabated; and

WHEREAS, IU’s more than 100,000 students across the state have demonstrated enormous patience and understanding as their professors and IU staff have worked to make the transition to virtual instruction; and

WHEREAS, the IU student body has also demonstrated patience and understanding in light of the postponement and cancellation of some of the university’s most cherished traditions, including participation in study abroad, the Little 500, athletic competitions, arts and musical performances, senior recognition ceremonies, and Spring Commencement ceremonies; and

WHEREAS, IU faculty, staff, and students are continuing to work to detect, manage, and ultimately help eradicate the threat of COVID-19 and to inform policymakers, industry and community leaders, journalists, and the public about the broader social, economic, legal, technological, and cultural facets of the pandemic; and

WHEREAS, the creative, bold, caring, and resilient members of the Indiana University community have demonstrated personal responsibility and taken swift collective action to protect the health and safety of our communities;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Trustees of Indiana University HIGHLY commend the university’s students, faculty, and staff for their resolve and determination, for the sacrifices they and their loved ones continue to make, and for their efforts, large and small, that will help all of us to weather this crisis.
