Employees encouraged to take part in spring bike challenge
April is National Bike Month. To celebrate, IU Bloomington Transportation Demand Management is hosting a Bike Team Challenge April 12 to 25.
Team members earn points every time they ride their bikes, and for every mile they pedal. There will be team prizes, a registration prize and a participation prize.

IU mourns passing of J. Michael Dunn, founding dean emeritus of Luddy School
The IU community is mourning the passing of Jon Michael Dunn, founding dean emeritus and professor emeritus of informatics and computer science at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering, and the Oscar R. Ewing professor emeritus of philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences. He was 79.
Dunn, who served IU for more than a half century as a faculty member, researcher and administrator, was a highly acclaimed scholar, specializing in logic and the foundations of mathematics, as well as the philosophy of language, the philosophy of mind, and the formal and foundational aspects of computer science.
ICYMI: Search for new IU president in final stage
During the April meeting of the IU Board of Trustees, the board announced that four trustees have been authorized to begin negotiations of a contract with a final candidate for IU’s new president.
Late last month, trustee and search committee chair Melanie Walker told the trustees that a diverse mix of external candidates had been visiting IU as part of the search process. Since then, the search progressed, culminating with final interviews on the Bloomington campus.
Trustees anticipate naming the new president this month.
Federal COVID-19 funding update
Faculty interested in pursuing federal funding this year to support work related to COVID-19 are encouraged to join Federal Research Relations and The Conafay Group as they provide an update on the shifting federal funding landscape for COVID-19 and its long-term effects.
The virtual presentation at 1 p.m. April 14 will address which persistent and new challenges government agencies are trying to solve this year, including perspective on the National Institutes of Health, Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, and the Department of Defense.
The meeting is an opportunity to understand the need, identify the right funding mechanism and apply strategically. A Zoom link will be provided in the registration confirmation email.
New FACET award named for James E. Mumford
The IU Faculty Academy on Excellence in Teaching, or FACET, is soliciting nominations for a new award.
The Dr. James E. Mumford Excellence in Extraordinary Teaching Awards will recognize IU Bloomington faculty members who have excelled as teachers during extraordinary circumstances. The award is named in the memory of James E. Mumford (1936-2019), who built an esteemed career first as director of the IU Soul Revue and later as the longtime director of the African American Choral Ensemble. Mumford earned his doctorate in music education from the IU Jacobs School of Music and was an active member of FACET.
All IU Bloomington full-time, part-time and adjunct faculty are eligible for nomination, and nominees do not need to be FACET members. Self-nominations are also welcome.
Deadline for submissions is April 30. Recipients will be announced in early May.
