A new cohort of over 30 IUPUI faculty has been named to the Association of College and University Educators’ Course in Effective Teaching Practices.

Offered through the Office of Academic Affairs and implemented by the Center for Teaching and Learning, the course is in alignment with Priority 1: The Success of our Students and Goal 1: Promote Undergraduate Student Learning and Success of the IUPUI Strategic Plan.

The Course in Effective Teaching Practices ensures that faculty learn about and implement the approaches that improve engagement and persistence, and promote deeper learning.

The class consists of 25 modules separated into five units of study:

  • Designing an Effective Course and Class.
  • Establishing a Productive Learning Environment.
  • Using Active Learning Techniques.
  • Promoting Higher-Order Thinking.
  • Assessing to Inform Instruction and Promote Learning.

There are 180 brief instructional videos that help faculty reflect upon examples of teaching real students in real classrooms, augmented by expert commentary offered by researchers.

“I’ve heard such positive feedback about the ACUE course from faculty who have taken it about its engaging format and how much they’ve gained from trying new teaching strategies,” said Terri Tarr, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning. “Faculty can form connections with cohort colleagues and the CTL that continue past the end of the course. The course has been an excellent way to expand the capacity of the CTL with evidence-based programming that requires minimal staff time.”

Over the past three years, more than 70 IUPUI faculty have completed the course, with 100 percent reporting that the modules were helpful in refining teaching practice, and 92 percent finding the content relevant to their work and that they would recommend the course to a colleague. Recent analyses conducted by IUPUI’s Institutional Research and Decision Support showed better student performance outcomes in courses taught by faculty who have completed the course

“Our faculty have consistently said the course has had a significant impact on their teaching and overall student success in their courses, and that they have really enjoyed the experience,” said Jerry Daday, executive associate dean of the Institute for Engaged Learning. ”The commitment of our faculty to complete the ACUE course is an important part of our ongoing efforts to promote student success, especially among first-year students enrolled in our general education and gateway courses.”
