The Indiana University Board of Trustees approved a new degree at its October meeting: a Doctorate in Philanthropic Leadership at the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at IUPUI.

The new professional doctoral degree is the first of its kind within Indiana. It will be offered online and is a 48-credit-hour program.

Students are expected to enhance their philanthropic leadership capabilities by refining their applied research skills and accomplishing a specific practical aim. Throughout the program, students will define key aspects of their culminating final applied project, including specifying a targeted philanthropic domain, identifying intended stakeholders, developing a communication plan to reach those audiences, executing an applied project with particular practical aims and disseminating the results to effect change.

The IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy is dedicated to better understanding philanthropy and improving its practice worldwide through critical inquiry, interdisciplinary research, teaching, training and civic engagement. This degree reflects the school’s aim to develop its curriculum in a way that engages practitioners who will effect positive change. The degree also reflects the campus’s goal to expand graduate education and the university’s goal to be a locus of academic innovation and educational excellence.

The program will be offered by existing full-time faculty and selected part-time faculty members. If the program meets its enrollment goals, the program is expected to generate positive revenue, which will support the hiring of additional faculty.

Students in the Doctorate in Philanthropic Leadership program will be seasoned professionals, and the format is designed to accommodate the needs and status of working professionals.
