IU’s GlobalNOC offers network monitoring service, improving research collaboration

The NetSage regional network monitoring system was previously only available to users who collaborated via an NSF grant

Indiana University’s Global Research Network Operations Center (GlobalNOC), a leader for 20 years in research networks, has expanded its service offering to include NetSage, a regional network monitoring system. Until recently, network owners interested in using NetSage had to be part of a National Science Foundation (NSF) project with the International Networks at IU (IN@IU) team in order to have a deployment for their system. 

NetSage is a network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to address the needs of today’s regional networks, especially in regard to global science research. Funded by the NSF, NetSage is a collaboration between network and data visualization experts from IU, the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory/Energy Science Network to detect and resolve network performance issues across a region.

By providing near real-time monitoring and visualization of data transfers, NetSage helps ensure that scientific workflows are operating at maximum efficiency. Scientists can concentrate on their research, while GlobalNOC experts make sure networks are performing at their peak.

NetSage was originally developed to support the NSF-funded International Research Network Connection (IRNC) projects, including NEAAR, TransPAC4, AmLight, PIREN, and Pacific Wave. It is currently in use domestically by the Regional Networking Partners to the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), which includes the Great Plains Network, iLight, KINBER, and the Front Range GigaPop. Additional archive deployments supported by both IRNC and EPOC include resources at NERSC, TACC, NOAA, and NCAR.

Offering NetSage as a GlobalNOC managed service helps improve research collaboration, according to Dave Jent, IU associate vice president of networks.

GlobalNOC provides researchers with a holistic set of tools that enable reliable and robust data transfers. By handling the full end-to-end data movement pipeline, GlobalNOC supports collaborative science, allowing researchers to make the most effective use of shared data, computing, and storage resources to accelerate the discovery process.
