University-wide role highlights IU’s expanding preeminence in cybersecurity

Indiana University has appointed Von Welch executive director for cybersecurity innovation, a university-wide role responsible for leveraging IU’s cybersecurity operational and research strengths in combination to address challenges faced across the nation.

In this new role, Welch will jointly report to IU Vice President for Research Fred Cate and IU Vice President for Information Technology Brad Wheeler. Welch will also continue in his role as director of the IU Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research, or CACR.

The winning app, Boost, improves student success via personalized notifications and encouragement

University Information Technology Services received the top award, the platinum medal, at the 2019 IMS Global Learning Impact Awards. The winners were announced at the Learning Impact Leader Institute, an annual education technology conference.

UITS received the award in the Evolution to Next Generation Digital Learning Environments category for Boost at IU, a mobile app that uses reminders, resources, and encouragement to improve learner engagement.

Spots are still available for kids in grades 7 to 12 to participate in Ready, Set, Robots! camp

Now in its 13th consecutive year, this hands-on, two-day camp requires no prerequisites or computer programming skills, just a curious mind and an interest in technology. Participants will learn basic computer programming skills as they work in teams alongside IU technology professionals to command LEGO® Mindstorms® robots to simulate a Mars rover mission. 

Camps culminate in an exciting Robot Grand Challenge, where each team’s robot struts its stuff.

The web-computing platform was created by IU scientists to support, publish reproducible neuroscience research

A new cloud-based tool, brainlife.io, is allowing scientists to track data on the brain to detect disorders such as dementia, sports concussion, and eye disease. This tool can reduce human errors that are made in scientific research practice.

At IU, brainlife.io is being used to advance research on multiple health care research studies, such as:

• Research on sports concussion and chronic traumatic encephalopathy led by Nicholas Port at the IU School of Optometry in Bloomington.
• Research on Alzheimer’s disease led by Andrew Saykin at the IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis.
• Research on macular degeneration in collaboration with researchers in Japan and Europe, which was recently published in the journal Brain Structure and Function.

Learn about tools, services via Canvas Expand modules; ask questions at live event

IT Pro Orientation is being reimagined. No longer an all-day, on-site event taking place three times a year in Bloomington, the new IT Pro Orientation features two informational components:

• Online orientation information accessible through Canvas Expand modules
• Onsite interaction between IT Pros and UITS service providers

In each module, IT Pros watch the short video(s) or read the transcript that covers the material. While reviewing this material, they are encouraged to write down two or three questions per video. On July 19, UITS will host an interactive orientation during which IT Pros can get answers.
