With the return of students, faculty and staff to our Indiana University campuses, there’s been an increase in pedestrians and bicyclists on the road. Remaining aware and obeying the rules of the road while traveling around campus can help keep us all safe.

“We’ve seen an increase in traffic and in accidents involving bicyclists since the start of the fall semester,” said Hannah Skibba, public information officer for IU Public Safety. “Whether you’re in a vehicle, on a bike or walking, it’s important to remember that you’re responsible for your life and the lives of others. Obeying traffic laws, avoiding distractions, and watching out for pedestrians and cyclists can go a long way in keeping everyone safe.”

Follow these road safety tips when traveling around campus:

Drivers

  • Stay aware and avoid distractions; don’t text and drive.
  • Obey the rules of the road at all times, including speed limits.
  • Remember that pedestrians have the right-of-way when they are in the street.
  • Respect bike lanes and cross walks.
  • Watch for bicyclists and pedestrians before turning.

Pedestrians

  • Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections.
  • Obey crosswalk signs and signals.
  • Walk on sidewalks whenever they are available.
  • Look for cars in all directions when you cross streets at crosswalks or intersections. You only have right-of-way when you are already in the street.

Bicyclists

  • Always obey the traffic laws that apply to vehicles, including stopping for stop signs and riding in the direction of the traffic flow.
  • Wear a helmet that fits properly.
  • Use bike lanes when available.
  • Signal your turns.
  • Avoid riding on the sidewalk.
  • Don’t make unexpected moves on your bicycle.
  • Have a working headlight and taillight when riding between dusk and dawn.
