Indiana University awards its millionth degree

The state’s flagship university reaches a rare milestone recognizing the unmatched value of an IU degree

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University has achieved a significant milestone, officially awarding 1 million degrees to students across the globe. The millionth degree was conferred among a batch of degrees earned during the summer 2024 term.

“This milestone is a testament to the power of an IU degree: IU alumni are changing the world every day,” IU President Pamela Whitten said. “This achievement also showcases IU’s enduring commitment to student success. We provide a wide array of programs and support that empower our students to succeed on campus and long after they earn their degrees.

“From our first class of 10 in 1825, to the nearly 90,000 enrolled today, Indiana University has been sought by students around the world due to its recognized educational excellence imparting the skills to transform lives, build communities and better the world.”

IU has nine campuses and offers more than 1,500 academic programs/certificates across the state. Its nearly 90,000 students on campuses across Indiana make IU the largest university in the state.

IU alumni are changemakers, leaders, award-winners, government officials, diplomats, Pulitzer Prize recipients, Tony and Emmy and Oscar award recipients, explorers, architects, and Olympians.

IU by the numbers

IU has one of the largest alumni bases of any university in the country. Of the 790,033 living graduates, 411,047 of them live in Indiana. There are 64 IU Alumni Association chapters and groups around the world.

IU’s first class in 1825 had only 10 people in it, and in 1830, IU’s first graduating class had only four students. The spring 2024 graduating class featured nearly 19,000 students across all nine campuses.

Over the past two decades, the most popular degrees awarded by IU have been business, arts and sciences, and health, nursing and medicine.
