Enrollment up at IU campuses; Bloomington sets record for overall enrollment

EDITOR’S NOTE: IU Indianapolis became official on July 1, 2024, and historical enrollments (fall 2022 and 2023) for the Indianapolis and Columbus campuses for this report have been restated to exclude those students with Purdue degree plans for comparative purposes.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Enrollment is up at Indiana University campuses across the state as IU welcomes 24,489 new undergraduate and graduate students this fall.

Beginner student enrollment is up by 3.5% university-wide with 15,574 students. Nearly 90,000 students are enrolled at IU this year, an increase of 2% from last year. Those students represent all 92 Indiana counties, every state in the nation and 166 countries.

“Our continued strong enrollment shows the value and impact of an IU degree in the eyes of students and employers,” IU President Pamela Whitten said. “We are proud of our commitment to affordability and creating a student experience that equips students for resounding success in the workplace and beyond.”

Across all IU campuses, the number of underrepresented students of color hit a record with an increase of 7.4% from last year. The number of both undergraduate and graduate beginner underrepresented students of color has also increased on all campuses, with nearly all campuses setting a record for the percentage share of enrolled students of color.

IU Bloomington

IU Bloomington set a record this fall with 48,424 students enrolled. Applications for the Bloomington campus were also up 25% from last year, which has led to the campus’s second largest beginning class ever at 9,600. IU Bloomington’s new class represents enrollment growth of 24% over the past decade.

The campus has 5,231 undergraduate beginner students from Indiana. For the seventh consecutive year, IU Bloomington enrolled beginner students from all 92 Indiana counties, and a record 48 states plus Washington, D.C. IU Bloomington’s beginner class is academically outstanding, with 38% achieving a 4.0 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale in high school. There are 88 valedictorians in this year’s cohort, and 29% of the beginner students graduated in the top 10% of their high school class.

The number of undergraduate students of color from Indiana at IU Bloomington hit a record this year, up more than 7% from last year.

IU Indianapolis

IU Indianapolis in its first year achieved increased enrollment, with undergraduate beginner students up 9% over last year, with 2,438 students enrolled.

Overall enrollment is also up on the Indianapolis campus, with 20,568 total students enrolled, when comparing only IU degrees and credits from the previous year. 

Applications were up more than 20% over last year for the Indianapolis campus.

The total number of enrolled underrepresented students of color on the Indianapolis campus is up 9.6% over last year.

Overall, Indianapolis students come from 92 counties, 50 states and 136 countries (including the U.S.). Of those, 83% are residents of Indiana.

IU Columbus and IU Fort Wayne, which are administered by IU Indianapolis, have also seen enrollment increases this year, with beginner undergraduate students up 6.6% and 19.1%, respectively.

Regional campuses

Overall enrollment increased at IU’s five regional campuses across the state with 17,532 students. Undergraduate beginner student enrollment also increased to 3,033, which is up 7.6% over last year and 13.9% over the previous two years. Overall undergraduate enrollment is up 7.5% at IU East, 1.2% at IU Kokomo and 4.2% at IU South Bend.

More undergraduate students across IU’s regional campuses are from Indiana compared to last year.

Graduate student beginning enrollment is also up for regional campuses, increasing nearly 12%. Both IU East and IU Southeast saw more than a 20% increase in graduate student beginner enrollments. Graduate student enrollment is up more than 5% at IU East, nearly 2% at IU Northwest and nearly 4% at IU South Bend.

The number of underrepresented students of color who enrolled in IU’s regional campuses increased nearly 7% from last fall. IU Northwest continues to maintain its Hispanic-Serving Institution designation. The number of beginner undergraduate underrepresented students of color at all regional campuses is up 10.5% over last year.

IU Online

Online education at IU continues to grow, with a record 9,362 IU Online students enrolled, an increase of 10% over last year. Undergraduate online enrollments grew almost 19%, and graduate online enrollments grew almost 4%. IU’s regional campus online enrollment grew by 723 students, an almost 22% increase.

These enrollment figures represent the number of students on IU’s official fall census day for this academic school year, which was Sept. 2, 2024.
