Expert Bio

Alex Straiker is a senior research scientist at the Gill Center for Biomolecular Science. His research focuses on characterizing cannabinoid signaling in the brain and the eye. Cannabinoids have been with us for thousands of years, but only recently have we begun to learn how they work in the body. In neuronal studies Straiker uses electrophysiology in combination with molecular biology and anatomy to investigate specific mechanisms of cannabinoid signaling. His work also focuses on cannabinoid signaling and function in the eye, relating to glaucoma, corneal healing and retinal function. He is working to develop an opiate antagonist.

Areas of Expertise

Neuropharmacology and cannabinoids.
